Affix Gems and Equipment Sockets Explained
Learn how gem families, tiers, socket compatibility, granted affixes, and equipment variants fit together before spending materials or building around a bonus.

Affix gems have a family, a tier, one or more granted affix levels, and a compatible socket relationship. The current game contains four gem families across two gem tiers. The same named equipment can appear with different fixed affixes or socket layouts, so compare the visible variant instead of treating every copy as identical.
Start with the actual socket shown on the equipment. A gem with a desirable affix is useless for that piece if the socket family or tier is incompatible. Do not rely on a generic gem picture: several top icons are PaperSprite atlas regions, and substituting one shared icon can hide the family distinction the player needs.
Separate fixed affixes from socket choices
A fixed-affix equipment variant already points to specific affix identities and levels. A socket variant instead provides one or more socket groups whose accepted gem family and tier must be resolved. Compare these as different acquisition and planning paths. One offers a known effect; the other offers flexibility but requires a compatible gem.
When two pieces share a name, icon, rarity, and base attributes, examine the variant label before calling one a duplicate. The meaningful difference may be the fixed affix library or socket group. A useful equipment page groups those choices under one item and shows the exact differences rather than flooding search results with repeated names.
Choose the affix by affected actions
Read the granted affix and ask which equipped skill, weapon action, defensive event, or resource loop it can change. If the answer is unclear, do not assume the broadest possible interpretation. Check the official localized description and reproduce the effect in the current game before using a precise numeric result.
Stacking an affix level can also involve conditions or caps not visible in a short label. The site can safely show that a gem grants a particular affix level and which socket accepts it; an exact final damage, duration, or cooldown needs the full rule order and a regression case that matches the client.
Organize gems by a decision you make
Instead of sorting only by name, group gems by family, tier, granted affix, and compatible equipment socket. Within a loadout, group them again by the active skill or survival problem they support. This answers the question players actually have: which owned gem can legally improve this piece for this build?
Keep a small set for frequently used weapon families and avoid consuming a rare compatible gem merely because its combat value looks high. A lower-value gem whose effect triggers in every fight may be more useful than a higher-value gem attached to an unused condition.
Verify after controller or inventory problems
The official launch issue list includes controller failures when equipping gear or inserting gems. If an apparently legal combination fails on controller, retry the interaction with mouse and keyboard and review the current patch notice before concluding the socket rules reject it.
After any successful change, inspect the equipment and aggregate affix list again. Confirm the gem left the expected inventory location, entered the intended socket, and changed the affix level you planned. This final check catches input failures and prevents building later decisions on an unequipped gem.
