Stagger is the resource that decides fights

Health decides whether you are alive. Stagger decides whether you get to do anything about it. Every character starts at level 1 with a Max Stagger of 120 and a Stagger Recovery Speed of 5, and those two published numbers are identical across all six classes — the Mercenary is no more stagger-resistant than the Sorcerer out of the box. What separates them later is gear, gems and how the class avoids being hit at all.

The way to read those two figures is as a pool and a refill rate. Incoming hits eat into the pool; when it empties you lose control of your character for a moment, and against a competent opponent that moment is the fight. Recovery Speed is how quickly the pool comes back once you stop absorbing punishment, which is why disengaging for two seconds is often a stronger play than trading one more attack.

Both numbers appear as attributes on equipment. Max Stagger and Stagger Recovery Speed are real stat lines you can build for, along with Poise Reduction Rate on the offensive side, and most players ignore all three because they are less exciting than raw Attack. The equipment database lets you filter for what actually carries them, and it is worth doing once you have died to the same stunlock twice.

Dodge is a charge, not stamina

Combat was rebuilt before launch, and one change invalidates a lot of the advice still floating around: the old Exhaustion penalty was removed, and dodge became an independent charge resource that no longer draws from Energy. If you read a guide that tells you to manage stamina between dodging and attacking, it is describing a version of the game that no longer exists.

The published figures are Max Dodge and Dodge Recovery Speed. Recovery Speed starts at 20 for everyone, while Max Dodge splits the roster in two: 350 for the Mercenary, Shadowstrix, Withered Knight and a Blasphemer Seer, and 250 for the Sorcerer, Blackarrow and a Reverent Seer. That split is a design statement. The classes that want to fight at range have the smaller dodge pool, which means repeated dodging is not their escape plan — spacing is, and dodging is what you spend when spacing has already failed.

Practically, treat your dodge pool the way you would treat charges on a skill rather than a bar you can shave. There is a floor below which you cannot answer the next commitment, and stepping over it because a fight felt winnable is the single most common way solo players die. The class profiles in the class database publish both dodge values, so you can see exactly how much room your character has before you take it into a raid.

Energy is the offensive resource

With dodging moved out of it, Energy now does one job: it pays for what you do to other people. Every class starts with Maximum Energy 100 and Energy Recovery Speed 10, with one exception — the Seer, whose energy bar is not displayed at all. If you are a Seer wondering where your resource meter went, it is not a bug.

The Sorcerer has an escape hatch nobody explains in the tutorial: its skills can fast-cast without channelling when Energy is empty, and still recover Energy in the process. That is an intentional desperation option. It means an empty bar does not mean you are disarmed, and knowing it exists changes how aggressively a Sorcerer can spend down to zero.

Equipment carries Skill Energy Cost Reduction, Energy Recovery Speed and Maximum Energy as attributes, along with Block Energy Cost Reduction for the weapons that block. If your problem is that fights end with you standing there doing nothing, those lines are worth more than another point of Attack, and the loadout planner will show you what a whole set adds up to before you buy any of it.

Super armor, blocking, and what neither of them does

Super armor is the state where an attack lands on you without interrupting what you are doing. It is not damage immunity, and it is not a permanent property of a class — it belongs to specific actions, which is why a Blasphemer Seer swinging a mace feels unstoppable during one animation and perfectly interruptible a second later. The community discussion about "Blasphemer super armour" is really a discussion about which of its actions carry that state, and no complete published list exists.

Blocking is a separate system. Sword and Shield carries an innate Block, and equipment publishes Block Damage Reduction Rate and Block Energy Cost Reduction as attributes, which tells you plainly that a block reduces damage and costs Energy. The developers have said directly that full damage negation is not the goal, because it would reward passive play — so treat a block as a way to survive a commitment you already made, not as a way to sit still safely.

The developers have also said something worth internalising about attacking: throwing an attack means accepting recovery frames. There is no version of this combat system where you get to swing without being briefly vulnerable afterwards. Most deaths that feel unfair are one attack too many, thrown into a window where the opponent was already recovering and about to punish.

Being chain-pressured, and breaking out

Getting picked up by a second enemy while you are still recovering from the first is how most bad runs end. The game clearly expects you to learn an answer to this: one of the shipped training tasks is called Breakaway Mastery, alongside Dodge Technique and a Precision Strike task for each class. If you skipped the training ground, those three tasks are the fastest half hour you can spend.

On the design side, the developers have stated that they intend crowd control to have diminishing returns, so a chain of stuns should get progressively less effective against the same target. What has not been published is the exact rule — how much falls off, over what window, or whether every control effect shares one bucket. Anyone quoting numbers for that is guessing, and the honest answer today is that the mechanic is confirmed in intent but not in detail.

What you can act on is the surrounding structure. Recovery Speed and Max Stagger are gear stats. There are affixes in the published list that address stun duration and defensive survivability, and the community's own observation is that almost nobody uses them, which makes them cheap. Browse the four gem families in the affix and gem lab and look at the defensive pool — Aegis, Tenacious, Bulwark, Iron Helmet, Stoic, Unyielding, Resilience and the rest — before your next set purchase.

When a cast keeps getting interrupted

Nine skills in the game are charged rather than instant: Crystal Icebolt, Windcraft, Eye of Insight, Shadow Step, Predator's Senses, Healing Rune, Healing Art, Psionic Shield and Death Ward. Six belong to the Sorcerer or the Seer. If you play either class and your complaint is that nothing ever finishes casting, the problem is usually not the skill.

The fix is to stop treating a charge as something you start when you want it and start treating it as something you spend a window on. Windows come from three places: a stagger you have just applied, a teammate holding attention, or terrain that breaks line of sight. Chanting Speed exists as an equipment attribute, so shortening the window is a legitimate build answer as well as a positioning one.

Notice also which classes get interrupt tools. The Mercenary has Shield Slam and Earthshaker, the Withered Knight has Breaker Shield Bash and Parry, the Seer's Mace list runs to Rune: Stun and Paralysis Curse. In a squad, knowing whose skill can break an enemy cast is worth more than any of you doing extra damage, and the weapon and skill browser is the fastest way to check what your group actually holds.

Building against stagger instead of around it

Once you understand the layer, gear choices get simpler. If you are dying while unable to act, you want Max Stagger, Stagger Recovery Speed and the defensive affix families. If you are dying while able to act but unable to finish anything, you want Chanting Speed, Skill Cooldown Speed or Energy economy. If you are losing fights you were winning, you are probably throwing one attack past the point where you should have disengaged, and no stat fixes that.

The recommended affix lists each class publishes are a reasonable starting frame here. The Mercenary's leans on Unyielding, Stoic, Bulwark, Tenacious and Iron Helmet; the Withered Knight's on Stoic, Aegis, Tenacious, Bulwark and Resilience; the Sorcerer's, tellingly, on Elusive, Swift and Vitality rather than on soaking anything. Those lists tell you how each class is expected to survive, which is a more useful signal than any community ranking.

Remember that affix levels stack across pieces, so a defensive plan spread thinly across a set can do nothing at all while the same investment concentrated on one affix crosses a threshold. What to do with this tonight

Run the training tasks — Dodge Technique and Breakaway Mastery specifically — and pay attention to how long your character is unavailable after each of your own attacks. That single observation changes more about your survival rate than any gear purchase, because it recalibrates when you stop attacking.

Then look at one gear slot. Open the equipment database, find a piece in your class that carries Max Stagger or Stagger Recovery Speed, and see what it would cost to hold.
